Monitoring of groundworks at a development at Barna Gardens, in Bearna townland, on the western outskirts of Galway City, took place on 23 July 2018. The development consisted of the construction of a serviced dwelling house, domestic garage, effluent treatment system and soil polishing filter. The monitoring was a condition of the planning permission.
There were no recorded monuments located within or in the immediate vicinity of the site, which was located just east of Barna Woods, off the northern side of the Galway-Barna road. There was clear evidence that the ground levels within the site were not original. According to the owner, material excavated from an adjacent development to the south was stored on the site and removed at a later date. Rock outcrop was visible in the east-north-eastern corner of the site. Building materials including ducting, timber and quarried stone were visible in places around the proposed development site.
The groundworks which took place consisted of the reduction in levels for the dwelling, garage, driveway and wastewater treatment system. Below the topsoil, modern fill and quarried stone on the surface was natural subsoil and bedrock.
The topsoil and fill contained modern artefacts. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
