Monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the upgrading of the existing Waste Water Treatment Plant on the outskirts of Athenry town in County Galway was undertaken over a period of 14 days between December 2017 and May 2018. The monitoring established that much of the site, particularly in the south and west, had previously been disturbed with made-up ground, mixed layers and stone fill throughout. In the north of the site a light brown sandy clay was encountered below the topsoil and would appear to represent the natural subsoil layer.
The monitoring of ground disturbance associated with the development revealed nothing of archaeological significance and the development will not impact on any sub-surface archaeological layers or features.
