An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to renovation works to a dwelling at Lisgoole Abbey, Enniskillen. The proposed renovations are contained within Lisgoole Abbey, a 19th-century villa located on and incorporating parts of a medieval Augustinian monastery (FER 211:043).
A previous evaluation of the development area was conducted prior to planning permission being granted (licence no AE/17/76).
Monitoring took place of all ground reduction. This consisted of the lowering of floor levels within the utility room, the excavation of underpinning trenches within the utility room and the removal of floor surfaces within the kitchen and adjoining halls. The utility room floor was reduced by 0.25m below its existing level. This resulted in the removal of the concrete floor onto the brown/grey gritty clay with frequent stone and mortar inclusions identified in the previous evaluation. The reduction in level did not expose the previously identified brick structure (AE/17/76) and as such it has been preserved in-situ without further examination. No further archaeological deposits were identified during the floor reduction.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
