Archaeological monitoring of site investigation works comprising slit trenches and test pits and other ground disturbance in advance of a significant infrastructure scheme for the Sillogue area in Ballymun, Dublin City was conducted in the townlands of Stormanstown and Balbutcher. The work was carried out between 13th November and 5 December 2018 on behalf of Dublin City Council.

The excavation of fourteen slit trenches and eight test pits was archaeologically monitored. These were mostly excavated to a depth of 1.2m, except where they were obstructed by concrete or services. It was found that the grassed-over public open space had been extensively disturbed by the previous construction of blocks of flats. Beneath the surface, old roadways and foundations are present, as are numerous services. All the ground exposed here appears to be artificially made-up ground.

Under the roadway, in particular Sillogue Avenue, the stratigraphy was different. This roadway was constructed in the 1960s and, although a number of services are present, the natural subsoil is as little as 0.35m below the road surface. Remains of earthenware land drains pre-dating the residential development, and a small glass bottle with a cork were the only finds.

No archaeological features or deposits were found during monitoring.
