Archaeological monitoring was carried out for a proposed development consisting of demolition of a single-storey garage and shed and construction of a two-storey, two-bedroom dwelling.
The development was located within the constraint area for DU022-082 Ancient Settlement Site of Donnybrook and is located 20-30m west of Laburnum Cottage, a 16th/17th-century house, DU022-082004.
The general stratigraphy consisted of a dark-grey brown loose fill, below the shed foundations. This was some 0.4-0.5m deep where it wasn’t truncated by the later foundations for the shed, and had occasional inclusions of stone, delph and earthenware, suggesting a 19th-century date.
A small box-shaped slab-built land drain was visible in section at the base of the foundation trench on the northern side, crossing the area of the foundations running north-west/south east; it was visible in section again at the eastern side of foundation trench. There was a rich organic deposit associated with this feature with significant quantities of animal bone. No dateable material was recovered in association with this feature, it may be 18th or 19th century in date.
Further monitoring was carried out during excavation for services; this area had been disturbed in more recent times and contained existing services or backfill of modern rubble material.
The findings during monitoring were considerable mixed debris and rubble from the late 18th and early 19th century indicating considerable evidence for settlement activity pre-dating the demolished shed. The presence of the box drain and its location in the vicinity of Harmony Cottage also indicates considerable settlement activity in the surrounding area.
