Test excavations were carried out on 16 and 17 November 2018, at the site of Shanganagh Castle, Shankill, Co. Dublin, in relation to the proposed development of a residential neighbourhood on land in the ownership of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
A total of 12 test trenches were excavated across the development site. The trenches measured 2m in width, 45-110m in length and 0.4-0.7m in depth. Excavated material typically consisted of 0.1-0.2m of sod overlying 0.3-0.4m of silty light-brown to yellow-brown clay, over stony grey natural. A number of drains, plough marks and modern services were exposed during excavation, and a single pit was exposed at the eastern side of Trench 8.
No evidence of any archaeological remains associated with Shanganagh Castle (DU026-120---), were identified during targeted test trenching. However, it is considered that due to the proximity of several recorded monuments to and within the site, and the scale of the proposed development area, the proposed development merits further archaeological mitigation in the form of archaeological monitoring.
