The 1.3782-hectare development site is within an area of significant industrial archaeological heritage and in repsonse to an archaeological condition (Condition 23) of the grant of permission (DCC Ref. 3855/09) the monitoring of the backfilled canal harbour and demolition of wharfside wharehouses was undertaken. Site works were only partially completed due to soil contaminant issues.
Nothing of archaeological significance was encountered, however the remains of a 19th-century "Palliser" type artillery shell were recovered from the harbour backfill.
