Archaeological assessment (test trenching) was carried out on 14 August 2018 on the site of a proposed residential development at the former Scholars Bar, Donovan Lane, Dublin 8. It was carried out in response to a condition contained within the grant of permission for a proposed residential development (Planning Ref. No: 2025/18). The former Scholars Bar is recorded in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as a school built between 1890 and 1900. The nearest recorded monument is located 200m to the north of the site.

Three trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development at the west end of the site at Donovan Lane. All three trenches revealed the presence of 18th/19th-century made ground in the vicinity of the River Poddle.

No features of archaeological significance were exposed and the only finds recovered consisted of animal bone, fragments of glass bottles, fragments of slag and some sherds of 18th/19th-century delft wares and black glazed earthenwares. The results of the testing are consistent with the deposits found on the adjacent site to the north by Eogan (97E0333) in 1997.
