Monitoring was carried out of groundworks associated with the development located at 17-19 Moore Lane, Dublin 1 in response to a grant of planning from Dublin City Council (Planning Ref. 3303/18). Monitoring was recommended in an assessment undertaken by the writer in April 2018.

The site is located within the zone of archaeological potential for Dublin City (DU018-020) and within the northern part of the site there is one sub-constraint recorded as a brick field (DU018-020506), which is shown on Rocque’s map of 1756. Historic cartographic sources indicate that the site was first developed in the late 17th and early 18th century when the pattern of streets was laid out. Moore Street was set out in c. 1708 and several houses fronted onto the street with garden plots to the rear by 1756 (Rocque’s map). Two versions of the Rocque’s map exist, with a post-1756 revision showing a U-shaped structure roughly within the boundaries of the development area. By the time of the detailed 1847 OS map, the site is shown as almost completely developed. Houses are marked fronting onto Parnell Street to the north and an entrance from Moore Lane into a small yard is depicted within the proposed development area. By the time of mapping dating to 1891, the houses fronting onto the street within the northern part of the site are shown as being accompanied by basements.

Monitoring of the site investigations identified post-medieval demolition layers across the site. These relate to the structures that formerly occupied the site, evidence for which is still present within the boundary walls.

Any future groundworks associated with development of the site will be subject to monitoring.
