Monitoring was carried out of groundworks associated with a residential development at 4 Pim Street, Dublin 8 in response to planning conditions attached to the development (Planning Ref: 3655/17).
There are no recorded monuments within the development site, however the site is located within 50m of Dublin City Zone of Archaeological Potential (DU018-020). There is also one monument in the wider vicinity, the route of the former Dublin City Watercourse (DU018-043001), c. 150m to the south-west. Watercourses were rechannelled through the lands to power various mills and industries in the area. One of these watercourses, later known as the City Watercourse, was channelled along James’ Street and Thomas Street to feed a cistern on High Street, which, in turn, provided water for the citizens of Dublin throughout the medieval period. Water was diverted from the Dodder sometime after AD 1244. At this point the Dodder was divided by a cutwater at Kimmage and channelled through Dolphin’s Barn to a cistern close to the modern city basin, before being drawn along Thomas Street and James’ Street by aqueduct into the city.
Monitoring was carried out during October 2018. A stone well, post-medieval in date, was identified during the course of works and this was preserved in situ.
No features of archaeological significance were identified during the course of works and no further archaeological mitigation is deemed to be necessary.
