Monitoring was carried out during ground works associated with the redevelopment of a site on Brickfield Lane and Brown Street South, Dublin 8 in accordance with condition No. 9 of the grant of planning (DCC Planning Ref.: 3316/16).

The proposed development is located within the zone of potential for historic Dublin (DU018-020), with the nearest sub-constraints comprising a Quaker Burial Ground (DU018-020503) 95m north-north-west and a 18th/19th-century house site (DU018-020358) 110m to the east.

The surrounding streetscape was set out during the 18th century; however analysis of historic maps indicates that the site remained largely undeveloped until the late 19th century. The line of the former Brickfield Lane passes through the centre of site, which was later realigned to the east. Post-medieval tanning features have been recorded to the east and medieval activity is recorded near the River Poddle.

Monitoring of the site was undertaken intermittently over the course of several phases of construction which ran from April to September 2018. Extensive industrial activity in the 19th and 20th century had caused disturbance across the site. The general level of the area had also been built up with layers of mixed clinker and demolition infills mixed through a clay matrix that may represent the residual remains of the topsoil that once covered the area.

No features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified within the development area during monitoring of groundworks on site.
