This site was identified during pre-development assessment (17E0630) in advance of a residential development. The archaeological features were distributed across two cuttings. Area A was an irregular-shaped cutting with maximum dimensions of 22m x 16m. Area B was located 30m to the east. It measured 20m x 20m.
Area A was a dense cluster of pits and post-holes. All features were cut into subsoil. The features comprised the partial remains of a structure of unknown form and date. Several instances of paired post-holes were recorded. Two post-holes had clear evidence for posts and associated clay/stone packing surrounding them. Elsewhere, there was no clear surviving evidence for packing. The paired nature of the post-holes, and the presence of packing, suggest a sturdy, permanent construction. Charcoal was identified in a number of features. No archaeological finds were recovered however. Several pits of different size and shape were also recorded. Some may potentially have formed a discontinuous gully surrounding the post-holes. This, however, was not conclusively demonstrated. These features were interspersed between the post-holes. The fills were broadly identical, with charcoal noted in varying quantities.
A single pit was recorded in Area B.
