Archaeological testing was carried out for nos. 118 to 120 James Street
Due to the presence of burials, Georgian and (possible) medieval remains it is recommended that a controlled archaeological excavation of nos. 118 to 120 be undertaken in all areas due to be disturbed by the development. This includes removal of any existing walls and removal of any existing archaeological features/deposits.
The removal of the north ‘yard walls’ of said structures which borders directly onto the current graveyard (and overlies the earlier graveyard) will be a particularly sensitive undertaking and should be taken into full account as part of the excavation process. Its removal and reinstatement will by necessity be a three-phase process beginning with no. 120 and ending with no. 118. This will require the graveyard excavation to be divided into three phases.
