Monitoring of groundworks at a development site located within the campus of Connolly Hospital, Mill Road, Abbotstown, Dublin 15, was carried out intermittently between 28 September 2017 and 1 October 2018. The project consisted of the development of a chidren's hospital satellite centre. The monitoring was a condition of planning granted by An Bord Pleanála.
The development was located in a landscaped green area along the southern side of the hospital and also included a small car park and an adjacent small enclosed green area. A number of services crossed the development area with man-hole covers visible in places. There were no recorded monuments within or in the immediate vicinity of the development site.
James Connolly Hospital first opened in 1955 as a regional TB sanatorium. It became a General Hospital in 1971 and in 2005 a new hospital building was officially opened and renamed Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown.
The groundworks consisted of general ground reduction across the site and excavations for pads/foundations, services and drainage (including an attenuation tank).
The monitoring revealed a very disturbed site which had been filled in recent times. Below the topsoil and tarmac on the surface was modern fill and quarried stone, above original topsoil, natural subsoils and bedrock. The entire area excavated contained several modern services. None of the modern artefacts uncovered were retained. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
