Monitoring of the demolition of an existing dwelling (of the Arts and Crafts style) and associated outbuildings, which dated to the early 20th century, and subsequent groundworks at a development site off the Old Naas Road in Dublin 12 took place on 7 and 19 June 2018. The monitoring was a condition of the planning permission granted for the development.
Pre-development testing of the site in 2017, under Excavation Licence No. 17E0449, revealed nothing of archaeological significance, however due to the proximity of a graveyard (DU018-033002) in which stands a medieval church (DU018-033001), and the limited areas that were available for testing, it was recommended that all groundworks associated with the development be monitored.
The groundworks consisted of the excavation of twenty-four pads. Below the disturbed topsoil, modern wall foundations and rubble were natural subsoils. The disturbed topsoil, wall foundations and rubble were associated with the buildings which had recently been demolished on the site. A small animal burial was uncovered in one of the pads. Only modern artefacts were recovered. Nothing of archaeological significance was in evidence.
