A programme of archaeological monitoring of test trenches took place between Baldoyle and Portmarnock, Co. Dublin in order to identify the impact of the proposed development (cycleway) on any previously unrecorded archaeological remains and to propose mitigation measures to reduce any impacts if any archaeological remains were identified. The work was undertaken for Fingal County Council.
Test trenching was carried out which involved the mechanical excavation of one trench measuring 980 linear metres. Located at ITM 723840, 741684 was the possible remains of an earlier field boundary. The First Edition Ordnance Survey maps shows a field boundary at this location. It was identified as a light yellow fine sandy fill which was orientated east-west and ran across the width of the test trench. It measured 1.12m in width and had a minimum length of 0.6m.
The results of the investigations have indicated that no sub-surface archaeological remains were present within the areas tested as part of the footprint of the proposed development.
