In this first phase of testing, six trenches were opened on the site of the construction of a new hotel, in the basement of the original Ormond Hotel, to investigate its archaeological potential. A seventeenth-century layer was identified in all trenches, which contained inclusions of animal bone, clay pipes and pottery. This appears to be the fill layers from the reclamation of ‘The Pill’ in the late seventeenth century (1675), and averaged 1m in depth. The base of all trenches contained a sandy gravel, and water began to flow into the trenches when this level was attained. This level was surveyed as -0.5m OD (minus), and this level relates to the original shore line of the River Liffey, prior to the reclamation of the Pill. It is unclear how deep these original fill layers were, as they were cut by later basements, at an average level of 0.5m OD. The trenches excavated during this phase of testing were located in the basement at the front of the hotel (i.e. the Quay side). Further testing is expected.
