Monitoring was carried out for site investigations of a proposed Educate Together School site in Grangegorman Strategic Development Zone (SDZ), Dublin 7 in response to planning conditions attached to the proposed development. The SDZ lies north of Dublin city, outside of the historic town (DU018-020) in an area that was largely rural down to the end of the late medieval period and largely suburban until the industrial development of the area in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Previous test trenching of the site carried out in 2016 by Rubicon Heritage (Bolger and Ryan 2016, 12E0370) did not identify any features of specific archaeological potential within the current proposed development area. The report highlighted features of archaeological interest in the area such as the River Bradogue culvert and the protected boundary wall. Some probable early 20th-century kerbing was noted which has been interpreted as relating to the internal road network of the Richmond Lunatic Asylum. Notwithstanding the findings of the testing the area was deemed to have potential given the surrounding sites and as such the report recommended the all ground works be subject to archaeological monitoring.
A monitoring archaeologist attended site on three occasions when site investigations were scheduled between August and December 2018. No evidence for previously unrecorded archaeological remains were noted in any of the excavated pits or trenches.
