A programme of testing was undertaken in a field lying 18m to the north of Kilgobbin Castle. The site occurs within the zone of archaeological constraint for Kilgobbin tower-house and its associated settlement (DU025–017), while a section of the Pale boundary is recorded 70m to the south (DU026–121002).
Nineteen trenches were opened throughout the site, which uncovered a substantial number of archaeological features that predominantly consisted of ditches and drains of medieval and post-medieval date, while quantities of medieval and post-medieval ceramics were also recovered. Twenty-one features were identified in Field 1 and twelve in Field 2; a number of these were continuations of features that were identified in two previous test assessments (Hagen 2002 and 2003; Moriarty 2005). The archaeological stratigraphy was largely comparable throughout the site, except for four trenches to the south of Kilgobbin Stream that included flood deposits.
