A programme of test trenching was carried out to study the impact, if any, on the archaeological and historical resource of the proposed N11 Druid’s Glen Road Scheme which is located at Loughlinstown, Co. Dublin. It follows a previous programme of testing in 2006, where a feature recorded as ‘charcoal-rich soil’ was identified, although its position was not accurately reported at the time.

The proposed scheme passes through a former garden associated with a now-defunct residential structure and a section of pasture to the east of the Cabinteely Stream. The eastern part of the proposed scheme is partially located within the zone of archaeological potential associated with DU026-119, listed as an early medieval cemetery. Testing of the section of the proposed scheme to the west of the Cabinteely Stream was carried out in 2016 under licence 16E0468. This identified the remains of a large-scale post-medieval brick kiln.

Four test trenches targeted the area that potentially contained the ‘charcoal-rich soil’ noted previously. No features or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of testing. It remains possible that ground disturbances associated with the proposed development may have an adverse impact on isolated archaeological remains that have the potential to survive beneath the current ground level and outside of the footprint of the excavated test trenches.
