Two phases of monitoring were carried out at No. 5 Hanover Quay, Dublin 2. The site is located on the north side of the Grand Canal Basin. A previous testing assessment was carried out at the site by IAC Ltd in September 2015 (Licence 15E0372) and based on the results of this, monitoring of ground works was conditioned in the grant of planning for a structure onsite (Planning Ref: DSDZ3865/14 condition 20, amended DSDZ2025/16) and a basement (DSDZ3866/14 condition 21, amended DSDZ4131/16).
Phase I monitoring of ground reduction works was carried out from 25 May to 18 August 2016 under licence 15E0372. Ground reduction to the level of the estuarine silts, which occurred at a maximum depth of c. 4.1m level across the site, was carried out.
A second phase of monitoring works (Phase II) was carried out from 5-25 January 2017. Monitored works included a further ground reduction of 0.3m across the site in addition to localised excavations for a crane base, attenuation tank and pile caps. All excavation was carried out through a remnant post-medieval demolition layer and grey estuarine sands and silts.
No finds, features, deposits or structures of archaeological significance were encountered. There are no further archaeological requirements associated with this development.
