Test trenching followed by monitoring was conducted in advance of the construction of a nursing home and sheltered accommodation buildings on lands to the rear of St Agnes Convent, Crumlin, Dublin 8.
Nine test trenches, measuring between 30m and 130m in total length, were excavated at the site during February and March 2018. A number of features of archaeological interest, comprising a possible charcoal-production pit (Trench 1), as well as two oval-shaped pits, a potential post-hole and a burnt area/fire-spot (Trench 3), were identified.
Following these discoveries, it was recommended that any subsequent groundworks at the site be monitored. This latter work was conducted on a phased basis between April and July 2018 but did not reveal any additional features of archaeological or potential archaeological significance. Instead, extensive evidence for modern activity was encountered, mainly in the form of overlapping plough furrows of nineteenth- and/or early twentieth-century date and pits containing building rubble and other recent debris.
