Test trenching was undertaken within the footprint of the proposed Beckett Road at Laughanstown, Co. Dublin within the Cherrywood Strategic Development Zone (SDZ). The investigation was undertaken to inform an impact assessment to be submitted with a planning application. The test area includes the available open greenfield space within the footprint of the road corridor comprising level pasture bordered by the M50. Cartographic and aerial photographic analysis shows the area as undeveloped fields to the north-west of Lehaunstown Castle (DU026-093) and west of Tully Church (DU026-023). Geophysical survey, undertaken within the test area in June 2015, indicated agricultural trends with a number of linear anomalies of limited archaeological potential.
A total of eight trenches, measuring 480 linear metres, were excavated on 24 May 2018. The location of the trenches was constrained by the presence of existing services, including water mains, gas pipelines, pylons and overhead wires. The testing indicated that the area was partially disturbed during previous construction associated with the adjacent infrastructure. No features of archaeological potential were identified within the available open greenspace in the footprint of the proposed Beckett Road alignment. Notwithstanding this there is low potential for previously unrecorded ephemeral archaeological features to survive beneath the current ground surface outside of the investigated trench locations.
