An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development on lands to east of Strangford Road, Downpatrick.
Previous evaluation works were conducted on the site under licence AE/18/81 and consisted of the excavation of a test trench and 6 test pits to the east of the existing ditch which bisects the site. This evaluation consisted of the excavation of three test trenches to the western side of the ditch. The test trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. Topsoil was found to extend to a depth of 0.25-0.4m in all of the trenches. For the most part it directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
