An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a residential development at Belvoir Park Hospital, Newtownbreda.
A total of 9 test trenches across Areas 1 and 2 were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket (see plate).
The trenches within Area 1 were excavated across an area which had previously been covered with trees. This section of the site sloped markedly down to the west away from the rath DOW 009:032. Topsoil within these trenches ranged in depth from 0.1-0.4m and directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of an orange glacial till.
The trenches within Area 2 were located on a relatively steep, west-facing slope. Topsoil within these trenches ranged in depth from 0.4-0.6m and directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of an orange glacial till mixed with areas of loose gravel.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
