An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed demolition of the former Priory Inn and construction of a new residential development at 11-13 High Street and 1 Stewart's Place, Holywood, Co. Down. The proposed development site is located within the Area of Archaeological Potential associated with the historic settlement of Holywood, DOW 001:043 and also contains one Historic Building, HB23/20/20A.
A total of three test trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket across the proposed development site. The depths of the trenches varied across the site depending on the depth at which subsoil could be reached, between 1.1m to 1.6m. There was no topsoil present on the site. The trenches consisted of a thick layer of building rubble which directly overlay the naturally occurring subsoil, which was a banded red-brown clay and stony clay.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
