An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of a residential development on lands adjacent to and South of 29 Loughend Road, Loughbrickland, Co. Down.
The evaluation consisted of the excavation of three test trenches across the construction area of the site using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
Topsoil was found to extend to a depth of 0.1 - 0.4m in all of the trenches. The depths of the trenches varied slightly across the site depending on the depth at which subsoil could be reached, between 0.1m at the top of the trench along the hillside to 0.4m at the bottom of the hill. The topsoil was removed onto naturally occurring subsoil which was a mid-orange/yellowish, silty/sandy clay material with frequent small and medium stone inclusions.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
