The BH3 archaeological evaluation required by HED was archaeologically monitored mechanical test trenching of the development area. This was undertaken on 14 March 2018. Within the two test trenches 0.1-0.2m of topsoil mixed with rubble from the recent site demolition were removed by a mechanical excavator using a flat-edge sheugh bucket. The subsoil was brown sand; there was no evidence for archaeological features within this material, nor were any archaeological artefacts recovered.

To ensure that no buried soil/raised beach horizons are present below the sand, a 1m deep test pit was also excavated. There was no evidence for stratigraphic change within the brown sand and as such no buried soil/raised beach horizons are present within the proposed foundation level for this development (a depth of 0.3m below the current ground surface).
