Archaeological monitoring of initial primary ground reduction works was undertaken during from 8–15 February 2018, having been commissioned by Fleming McKernan Associates on behalf of Coleraine Gospel Hall, and relates to a Planning Condition requested by the Department for Communities; Historic Environment Division: Historic Monuments Unit (DfC:HED:HMU) under Planning Policy Statement 6: Built Heritage 4 (PPS 6:BH4) for archaeological mitigation associated with the proposed demolition of the existing Gospel Hall and construction of a new Gospel Hall and car parking at Brook Street, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry (Planning Ref: LA01/2015/1064/F). All invasive groundworks associated with the scheme were undertaken under archaeological supervision.
Following the demolition of the existing building, primary ground reduction works comprising the removal of floor surfaces and excavation of foundation trenches for concrete foundations, revealed glacial subsoil (comprising a loosely compacted sand) which was encountered directly below modern overburden/construction layers associated with the building which previously occupied the site.
These construction layers varied in depth between c.0.1–1.25m and contained frequent but small amounts of late 20th-century construction materials, including concrete foundations and a probable crane base.
No archaeological features, remains, deposits or artifacts were identified within the boundaries of the proposed development area during archaeological works at the site.
