An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposal to construction a residential development on lands due North of nos 1-21 Coneyville, Culmore, Derry.
A metal detection survey was carried out using a Teknetics Euro Tek pro devise which is appropriate for the detection of all artefacts and shot which could be potentially within the development area. This device is also effective to a depth of 1-2m which is also appropriate for this survey. The development area was surveyed in 2m-wide transepts from 1m within the perimeter fence adjacent to the Coney Road. In total 85 transepts were surveyed all of which were parallel and ran north-north-east/south-south-west. In the area up to 25m from the Coney Road, a large number of modern finds were uncovered. These include drink and food cans, metal piping, manhole covers and various pieces of scrap metal. Nothing was recovered from the remainder of the field.
A series of 11 test trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket to the levels of naturally occurring subsoil or archaeological strata, whichever was highest.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
