An archaeological evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of Phase 2 of Galliagh residential development on lands located to the south of Skeoge Link, Derry.
Monitoring of topsoil removal was conducted across the proposed development site. The initial topsoil removal was conducted using a bulldozer to remove the upper levels of vegetation and sod layer across the site. The remaining topsoil material was removed down to subsoil level using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
Topsoil across the site was found to be on average 0.3m thick at the northern (upper) end of the site, increasing to a depth of 0.4-0.5m as the land sloped down to the south. The topsoil directly overlay naturally occurring subsoil which consisted of an orange/brown sandy clay.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
