Hand augering was required in five areas (P1-P3, P5 and P6) within the Road Scheme as the peat deposits here were too soft to allow for safe mechanical test trenching. Manual hand augering was deemed the only viable method of archaeological site investigation which could be undertaken. A sixth area (Area P4) was outlined in the WSI for auger surveying, subsequent on-site inspection showed that the area was suitable for machine trenching and the auger survey was not undertaken.

No archaeological remains, or significant paleoenvironmental deposits were discovered during the hand augering. The augering confirmed that the areas tested had been historically marginal land and as such the lack of archaeological remains is not unsurprising.

The auger surveys were located at the following central co-ordinates.

Area P1: C 50224 10715 (ITM X 650170 Y 910723);

Area P2: C 53754 08408 (ITM X 653700 Y 908416);

Area P3: C 55103 08623 (ITM X 655049 Y 908631);
