Due to its proximity to Brackfield Bawn (LDY 023:014) Site 1 had been identified in the WSI for the road scheme as an area where detailed excavation was to be undertaken. The works were undertaken in two areas. Both areas were metal detected in advance of excavation, and no archaeologically significant artefacts were recovered.
As per the WSI monitored topsoil strip was undertaken in Area A. In Area B to avoid damaging the gardens of the occupied houses the detailed excavation area was replaced by three small hand-excavated trenches (5m long and 1m wide) and 1m apart. No archaeological remains or artefacts were identified in the two areas investigated. Evidence for extensive ground re-modelling was found in Area A which could be related to previous road improvement work. In Area B there was evidence for enhanced topsoil coverage in the gardens to the west of the bawn, this topsoil is likely to have been arising from the construction of the laneway which bisects the two areas.
