Ten test trenches were excavated across the site of Penrose Quay Railway Station in advance of redevelopment. Five-foot gauge track survived at the northern end of the complex and contemporary turntables were identified to the south of the site. Small 3.3m diameter turntables, used to turn wagons, were found in a goods depot and larger turntables, to turn the locomotives (and still to be further investigated), were found associated with the Station House. Further investigations will be undertaken as demolition is carried out and other areas become available.
