The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, following consultation with the National Museum of Ireland, issued Directions to Cork County Council for archaeological test excavation works relating to the approved road development (A075).
During Stage (i) test trenching one archaeological site, a burnt mound, was identified within the proposed route of the new road. Construction will have a permanent direct negative impact on this monument. This was subsequently excavated under Registration Number E005029 by Bruce Sutton.
Overall, Stage (i) test trenching has confirmed that extensive areas of deep made ground exist across the lands required for the project.
