A programme of archaeological monitoring was undertaken at a number of locations in Cork City Centre between January 2018 and July 2018, in accordance with Ministerial Consent C00858 and Registration Number E004956.
These works were undertaken on behalf of Cork City Council. Archaeological monitoring was required as a condition of the planning permission issued by Cork City Council.
The works area incorporated part of the circuit of the medieval defences of Cork City. Works included public realm changes/improvements including; planting, public lighting, street furniture, amenities, pedestrian facilities, surface improvements etc.
There was potential that sub-surface excavation works to facilitate alterations to the Public Realm could expose sub-surface sections of the medieval city defences/town wall, in particular on the following streets:
• Batchelor’s Quay
• Grattan Street
• Washington Street
• Castle Street
• Corn Market Street
The monitoring programme was carried out by Rubicon Heritage Services Ltd. for Cork City Council. No deposits or features of archaeological significance were encountered.
