Test trenching in advance of a proposed housing development was undertaken within an overgrown green field area surrounding a derelict 19th-century house, known as Hawthorn Cottage, located on the western outskirts of Mallow town. A licence for the use of a metal-detector was obtained in order to assist in artefact retrieval (ref. 18R0159). The investigations entailed the excavation of eight trenches within accessible areas of the site and nothing of archaeological significance was revealed.
