Two samples from the castle were radiocarbon dated. One was of hazel charcoal from the east wall of the porter’s lodge vault which returned a date of cal. AD 1530–1950 (UBA-39807) with the most likely date being in the mid-17th century. The second was of carbon dioxide extracted from mortar from the ceiling vault of the 1st floor in the north-east corner and was dated to the period cal. AD 1320–1636 (Aarhus AAR-29910).
