Advanced archaeological test trenching undertaken on the footprint of a proposed gas pipeline corridor within the townland of Magaraty (Field 8.19), County Armagh uncovered a circular feature thought to be the remains of a house and some associated pits were identified in one part of the field. The pipeline route was altered to avoid these features which could then be preserved in situ. Monitoring of topsoil stripping within the adjusted corridor uncovered a number of potential archaeological features. Excavation showed that only a small number of the potential features were of archaeological significance, totalling three post-holes and one pit. All of the archaeological features were fully excavated. Radiocarbon (AMS) dating will be required to determine the relationship between the post-holes and the nearby features (circular structure and pit). Post-excavation works are ongoing.
