An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed planning application for a residential development on lands opposite and to the south of 15 Dartan Ree, Tynan.
Four test trenches were excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied across the site depending on the depth at which subsoil could be reached, between 0.25m to 1.6m. In some cases topsoil was removed directly onto subsoil. In other places the topsoil overlay a layer of fill. The topsoil was a brown silty loam, apart from the very north-west extents of Trenches 3 and 4 where the topsoil was replaced by a layer of sand, terram and pea gravel. This represents the remains of a horse arena which was previously located within the site. The fill was a grey-brown clay, containing building rubble and rubbish. The subsoil was banded in nature and consisted of an orange clay and an orange-grey clay.
No archaeological deposits were identified during the course of the evaluation.
