An archaeological evaluation was carried out prior to the proposed construction of a new educational facility as part of the Southern Regional College, Lonsdale Road, Armagh.
A series of 6 test trenches were excavated by mechanical digger fitted with a toothless bucket and under strict archaeological supervision. The depths of the trenches varied across the site ranging from 0.2 m to 1.5 m. In all cases the trenches were excavated through modern fill layers containing frequent inclusions of concrete, brick and hardcore. A number of modern walls, along with modern services, were identified during the course of the evaluation, and these prevented subsoil being exposed for the full length of the trenches. Where subsoil was exposed it consisted of an orange plastic clay. The evaluation established that the development site has been heavily disturbed by modern building activity.
No evidence of any archaeological deposits was identified during the course of the evaluation.
