An archaeological evaluation was carried out at the site of a proposed dwelling at lands 45m north of 72 Mullan Road, Rasharkin in response to a request for more information from DfC: Historic Environment Division under Planning Policy PPS6 BH3.

A desk-based study and examination of existing site conditions has confirmed that the proposed development is located within close proximity to ANT022:022, a scheduled large banked rectangular enclosure of uncertain date. There remained the potential for survival of sub-surface archaeological material associated with this monument to extend within the development boundaries.

A series of test trenches set within the boundaries of the site were opened. Test trenching revealed topsoil to range in depth between 0.2–0.5m across the site, sitting directly on to natural subsoil. No archaeological deposits of features were noted during the test trenching and as such it is recommended that the development be allowed to proceed with no further archaeological involvement.
