Phase 1 of the works at Hightown Quarry commenced on 2nd July 2018 with a licenced archaeologist in attendance. This phase consists of the reuse of ground which has already been stripped and previously worked with no original ground levels or potential archaeological deposits surviving within the Phase 1 area
The archaeological monitoring of the Phase 2 works took place on 14th January 2019 under the same licence and consisted of a walk over of the proposed development area, located to the east of Phase 1. Much of the area consisted of substantial mounds of spoil which were a product of topsoil stripping which had occurred across the area a number of years ago (pers comm. quarry rep). Exposed bedrock was visible across this area, with no indication of any surviving in situ original soil profiles. It is considered highly unlikely that any archaeological deposits survive within the Phase 2 works area.
