An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed demolition of the existing building at 5 Market Street and the construction of a residential development located at the corner of 7 Market Street and Café Lane, Ballymoney. The proposed development site is located within the Area of Archaeological Potential for Ballymoney, ANT 017:060, which represents the historic core of the settlement.
The evaluation consisted of the excavation of four test trenches in the south west corner of the site. The test trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket. The depths of the trenches varied across the site from 0.9-1.9m, and varied in length from 7-15m.
No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
