An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed demolition of a former bed and breakfast premises and construction of a residential development at 1-7 Kerr Street, Portrush. The proposed development site is located within the Area of Archaeological Potential for Portrush, ANT 002:014.
The evaluation consisted of the excavation of a single test trench in the south-west corner of the site. The trench was excavated using a back-acting machine fitted with a toothless bucket.
To the north-western end of the trench rubble was removed onto a mixture of rock outcrop and orange glacial till which was found at a depth of 0.1m. To the centre of the trench rubbish/rubble was removed onto a rock outcrop which extended across the trench with some small areas of natural orange subsoil present. To the south-eastern end of the trench the rock gave way to mostly natural orange glacial till subsoil with rock showing in areas. The south-eastern area of the trench was covered with a mixture of rubble and topsoil, this area had previously been left open to grass and vegetation growth for years before this.
No archaeological features were identified.
