An archaeological evaluation was undertaken ahead of the proposed development of a 3-storey rear extension at the Newsletter Building, 55-59 Donegall Street, Belfast.

The evaluation consisted of the excavation of two test trenches orientated north-north-east/south-south-west across the site. The test trenches were excavated using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless bucket.

The depths of the trenches varied across the site depending on the depth at which subsoil could be reached, between 0.7m to 0.95m. The tarmac and levelling deposits associated with that were removed onto rubble and machine-made brick walls. The walls were built either directly onto the subsoil, or on foundations cut into the subsoil. The naturally occurring subsoil for the area was a blue-grey sleech.

No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches.
