Test pits were hand excavated on a derelict and overgrown site at Mill Lane, Bray, Co. Wicklow due to the inaccessibility of the site for a machine as well as its steep sloping nature.  The assessment and excavation of test pits were carried out as part of a further information request (planning no. 161085) in order to determine the nature and extent of any archaeological remains that may be present on the development lands.  The site slopes steeply down to a minor road which runs alongside the River Dargle.  There are no archaeological sites within the development site but the development lands are close to WI 004:001004, church and graveyard.

The stratigraphy varied slightly in each pit but generally consisted of c. 0.6-1m depths of modern rubbish/gravel/topsoil overlying subsoils of natural yellow stony clay. Debris and gravels were deeper at the bottom of the slope presumably from slippage down the sloping bank. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded during the testing.
