A total of 10 test trenches and were monitored at Brideswell Co Wexford in accordance with Wexford County Council’s Request for Further Information, dated 12 July 2017, Planning No. 20170624. The site encompassed approximately half of an existing field. The site was relatively level with a very slight downward slope toward the north-west.
Excavation work consisted of 10 test trenches of varying length on the proposed development site. Soil stratigraphy was quite uniform throughout the site. Topsoil was mid- to dark-brown and moderately silty, with a depth of 0.25-0.5m, and containing frequent root material in areas close to the existing field boundaries. Below this was a 0.1-0.6m layer of light-brown to orange-brown clay. On occasion this layer contained small flecks of charcoal (20mm x 10mm max), most likely due to past land clearance or stubble burning. The lowest layer of excavated material consisted of light to mid-grey stony clay, which became progressively more stoney and rocky with increased depth of excavation. This material was undisturbed.
All of the 10 trenches were devoid of archaeological activity.
