The proposed development lies approximately 700m to the south-south-west of the centre of the historic town of Gorey (WX007-033----), and is within the grounds of protected structure Ramsgate House/Cottage (NIAH 15701201), at Oakhill, Ramstown Lower, Gorey, Co. Wexford. A total of 6 test trenches were monitored in accordance with Condition No.14 of Wexford County Council Planning Reg. No. 20161345 (Appendix 1).
The site was located on gently sloping ground, with a slight downward slope toward the south-east and east. The test area comprised approximately one fifth the Phase 2 development area.
A common stratigraphy was found through all the test trenches. The earliest deposit in all trenches was a natural layer of mid-brown stony clay. This layer was sealed by a layer of redeposited mid-brown clay with heavy root disturbance, 0.2-0.3m in depth. Topsoil had been largely stripped from the site; in patches were it remained it was silty and mid-dark brown in colour with a depth of 0.15-0.25m. Frequent root material was found in all trenches.
All of the 6 trenches were devoid of archaeological activity.
