Advance archaeological testing was carried out within a proposed permanent fill area (PFA) 5 contiguous with the lands acquired by Compulsory Purchase Order for construction of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP Project by Wexford County Council. PFA 5 is located in the townland of Corbally. Test trenching followed a desktop assessment report carried out by IAC Ltd (Tobin 2016).
A total of 26 test trenches, measuring 3,160 linear metres, were excavated. A buffer zone of 30m was maintained around the recorded remains of medieval enclosure site WX020-117001 to the north. In all, four archaeological areas (AA) were identified during testing which have been designated as Corbally 6 (AA 1–4), for the purpose of this report.
Area 1 comprises the remains of a truncated burnt mound, three pits and a possible kiln. Area 2 comprises a single kiln feature. Area 3 comprises 12 pits of varying sizes, 2 post-holes and an area of in situ burning/possible hearth which may be associated with WX020-117001 30m to the north. Area 4, located within the south-west corner of PFA 5, comprises a pit and four post-holes.
Groundworks associated with the proposed development of PFA 5 would have a direct negative impact on features designated as Corbally 6 (AA 1–4). As preservation in situ would not be achievable within the proposed development agreement with the NMS was sought for preservation by record (through archaeological excavation). The site was subsequently resolved under Registration Number E004857.
